Just as the Salmon River is somewhat out of the way of the modern world, it is also out of the way for historians. Our area has a great deal of rich history dating back thousands of years and includes one of the most populous areas in California prior to the gold rush, one of the biggest gold strikes in American history, visits by at least two U.S. presidents before they were in office, one of the biggest salmon runs on the West Coast, the world's largest incense cedar tree, one of the oldest pioneer buildings in far Northern California, and much, much more.
SRRC began archiving local history in the early 2000's when volunteer Jeff Buchin first assembled the Salmon River History CD containing photos, videos, and oral histories. Technology has moved on and the History CD is now itself a piece of history. However, SRRC has continued to collect and present a variety of history media both in print and online. We continue to seek new material.
Our Winter 2014 newsletter was devoted to local history, including a print timeline. In May 2014, we released our multimedia Salmon River History Timeline: 1849-present with over 200 local history stories, hundreds of photographs, video, newspaper clippings, and audio recordings. It has been updated regularly as new infomation has become available or new, historically significant events have occurred.
Local river residents, past and present, have provided SRRC with a majority of the photographs, historical documents, and stories of our place. We know there is much more out there waiting to be cataloged, archived, and shared. Please share your historical information so we can all know the story of the Salmon River.
We also welcome your financial support to help us continue this important work and solidify our History Project. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution online today and help us with this project so we can all better understand our collective history.
We hope you enjoy the latest product of our History Project, a fascinating multimedia timeline of Salmon River history from 1849 to present.
